“It was important to me that I supported and chose all Naarm based independent vendors for my wedding. After speaking with Monikha from Other Good’s & Services, they put me onto Jessie to potentially create my wedding dress.”
“Once I had explained my vision, Jessie was able to breathe life into my ideas and came up with about a dozen designs for me to choose from. After discussing the pros and cons of all the designs we decided to go with a mashup of a few of the sketches she had come up with, thus the dressmaking began.”
“Throughout the process, Jessie had really clear communication and I always felt well taken care of at each of our appointments together. She was flexible with my schedule and really made the process stress free for me as we were always on the same page and having a laugh. Jessie has a wide breadth of dressmaking knowledge and she was even able to tailor my now husband’s vintage Burberry suit and created a custom shirt to suit the retro style of his blazer for our wedding.”
More about Jessie…
I'm a designer/dressmaker from Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland), Aotearoa (New Zealand). As a person of mixed heritage, I use clothing design as a medium to explore ideas of race, gender, decolonisation, identity and diaspora. My professional background is in bespoke Bridal and Event Wear, Tailoring and Costume Design.
I started showing an interest in making clothes at the age of 6 when I would grab wash cloths and cut them into tubes and handsew them together to make my barbie some unique clothing. I wish I still had one of these pieces I remember making so clearly.
My interest in construction only grew from there and at 16 I started studying patternmaking part time and when I finished highschool I studied a diploma in patternmaking and garment construction.
Since completing my studies in 2014 I have gained 10 years of experience in various roles within the fashion industry. Over those 10 years I have become very disillusioned with many aspects of the industry, particularly the devaluation of the craftspeople actually creating the clothing we consume and I now chose to see myself and my business as existing outside of fashion and consumer culture.
My focus is on artisanal craftsmanship, exceptional quality and creating meaningful experiences for clients, working in collaboration with my clients to reach their desired outcomes and solve problems on their terms.
